No need for mono if it's backlashes you're afraid of

Berkeley Spiderwire Stealth - backlashes pull out as easy as mono (something about the teflon coating going through the line rather than just on top, so I was told by a rep)

I've been using it exclusively since it came out. 30# on my conventional plugging reels, 65# on the big bait reels.

It's lousy on spinning, so don't go there

I tried Berkeley Spiderwire Stealth awhile ago on one of your suggestions.

Terrible line. Mysterious break offs. Didn’t cast well and didn’t feel right.

I threw out a 1200 yard spool of Spiderwire Stealth.
Maybe a bad spool but I’m no trying that again
I went back to Sufix 832

Maybe the gent never heard of dacron and its applications back then.. pre-spectra/dynemma/pe, lol

Let me rephrase  ….Braided fishing line is primarily intended  to be used with spinning reels vs. conventional

Pretty sure Yozuri Hybrid in the original Purple/Smoke color is dis-conned.

Pro Spec chrome - 16lb to 20lb - I like the blaze orange color in the surf.  Sadly they now charge you almost 50 bucks for 1000 yards of 20lb.  You used to be able to get over 2000 yards for that price!

I use 50lb Berkley Big Game for my shock leaders.

I also hear great things about Momoi Diamond mono.

Nope

You are off base.  They are intended to be used by both spinning/conventional reels and in most fishing applications they are used in tandem.

I guess you don't remember dacron line being used on conventional reels back in the day??

I am talking about current times …in my part of the country the vast majority of fishermen are in agreement that braided line is intended for spinning reels for most situations especially when someone is casting a lot.

Then why are guys that are deep dropping with conventional reels using primarily braid with a top shot of mono?  Why is my 50 wide 3/4 full of braid with a top shot of mono?

You're just wrong.

I thought it was discontinued... My mistake.. I sure can't find the 6# Mist Green Ultra-Soft around though... That has been my staple for surf fishing in SO CA...

Butch

They just don’t make the 17lb anymore. 15 or 20.

Braid was invented for spinning reels IMO

Braid was used on conventional reels long before mono was developed. It began with linen, then braided nylon, followed by Dacron, and finally polyethylene "super" braids.

Wow, looks like that sparked a heated discussion. I never tried mono on conventionals so for me I just don’t know any better. I am very happy with the braid I am using so to tell me I am wrong in using it is a wee bit offensive. Kinda like saying if you don’t like redheads then you should not be liking women period. How about we get back on track and keep it to which mono y’all prefer. The Braid VS Mono discussion can be saved for a different thread. For all of you who have chimed in so far, thanks! Going to let it roll a little longer and then decide which I will try. Thanks.

You didn’t read my post  closely..for situations like deep dropping and trolling yes braid on conventional more common l…but for most other situations mono is the most common choice on conventional reels. Surf casting, pier fishing etc.

to each his own
