First Osprey Sighting

When is your guess when they first show up. I'm guessing March 15.

First sighting I heard about on the Chesapeake was at Williamsburg, VA.  It won't be long now for LI but it seems a little early even for here.

I hope to see them a lot, again.

Last year I noticed 2 abandoned nests in my neighborhood.

Both nests were occupied in 2020.

I saw one last weekend in CT on the Housatonic River.

Wow

That is kind of early for them.

Maybe a young male, that is returning for the first time, looking for to start building nesting place.

It may have been.   

It was being harassed by a peregrine falcon too!  

It was right by a highway overpass.   I've seen the falcons get testy on a few occasion.  Once a bald eagle came cruising by. Falcons even gave that bird some attitude.

That's about right.  They seem to arrive with the river herring, which tend to show up mid-March on the East End.

 

Here in SW Suffolk, the herring come in aroun d the 20th or 25th, and the osprey show up around then.  Of course,, we get a lot of trout stocked around then, too, which help to keep the osprey happy.

Yes, if it has fins and is the right size they will go for it. Once saw an osprey with someone's expensve Koi from a backyard pond.

I used to love Ospreytrax dot com that allowed you to follow birds that had transmitters and their epic migration.  As a former Long Islander my favorite was named North Fork Bob who nested in Mattituck for several years.  Unfortunately he got ambushed in Florida a number of years ago probably by a great horned owl while sleeping at night.

There's gonna be some Osprey/ Bald Eagle smackdowns as a few Baldies have absconded the vacant nests over the winter. Here on the North Shore, western Suffolk it's usually around the 25th.

^ for sure, the bald eagles are all posted up on the rivermouths currently.

Just to let you know I have been cursing you for last two days.

Every time I see a bird flying I stop and look up; every time I heard a bird sound, I stop and look up; every time I notice some movement in the air, I stop and look up, hoping to see early sign of ospray.

Damn Paul, why did you mention that you saw one?

Sorry.  Maybe it was a white perch I saw.  

 

Maybe it never migrated??  That river stays open all year and holds fish all year as well.  

 

Saw a few green wing teal this morning. So maybe the migration is on it's way.  Even thou it's cold as balls.

Since I read you saw one I have been talking about them with everybody.

My wife said FU and osprays because I asked her to pass by local football field to check on the nest there.
