Years ago I used to make the trip to Michigan in the fall for the salmon run but I haven't gone in years . I use to fish the Plat near Beulah an other streams in the area . I always did very well but I haven't gone in a long time . Just wondering if any of you guys go there an is it as good as it use to be ? Thanks Jim

My Salmon & Steelhead fishing was south of there out of Baldwin.  Spent many a fall and spring weekend up there with so winter ones mixed in.  The had a good fall Salmon run this year as you know it can be cyclic.  Lived in Michigan for almost 12 years and I was pretty much single so I got to fish a lot.  Further north we trout fished in the summer but never wandered further north than the Manistee for the Big fish.  Hope to get back there for a trip soon.

I also fished this same area decades ago in the fall.  Western edge of the time zone, light till 10 PM made for long days.  If the Coho's stood still you could walk across the stream on them.  Chinook's to 30 lbs+ on a fly rod in the river was epic.  Slip the local smoker guy a few bucks extra to get to the front of the line so you could leave with plenty of smoked fish.  Fresh spawning salmon tasted like rubber, hence the smoker solution.  Maybe someday I'll get back there.

That fishery isn't what it used to be, but it's in better shape than the steelhead. I'm not sure if the decline of the steelhead has caused an increase in the number of salmon fisherman, but last year was my last trip. It's too crowded, and I can do a week in the Bahamas for less money. I fished the PM, and little Manistee. My uncle (the resident) prefers the St. Mary's.
