What’s a Good reel? Thanks in advance.

Maxell 25

Tsunami Forged 10 (or 8)

Penn Fathom 12

Penn Fathom 15LW

Shimano Tekota 300

AND anything of similar size and weight. The bottom line is what YOU LIKE and feel comfortable using.

They are all capable and the fish do not know or care which one you have.

Star drag. No levers.

12lbs or more drag

Around 10 ounces in weight.

If getting a levelwind, get a synchronized, non disengaging model.

Not a fan of the Tekota. I lost a good fish on one when the spool torqued and jammed. Drag pulled, line went at an angle to the levelwind, spool torqued, jammed, broke it off. Also popped out a levelwind support post when that happenned. So not a fan of levelwinds in general and the Tekota 300 in particular.

Forgot to mention Level wind. It’s for my old man and he’s not cheap. He’s also 75 so he likes the level wind. He likes what he likes I told him to Hell with the Level wind.

I have been using a Seigler SG Narrow and absolutely love it.  It's a lever drag but that has never been an issue.

Why do you dislike lever drag reels?

Levelwinds. Not my favorite but I do use them. Okuma Komodo 364p is my favorite at the moment. I'd like it more if the bearings were faster

IMO levers are a PITA compared to a button release, auto engage, star drag for bottom fishing.

I like them but I’m asking for my father who likes level wind reels.

A level wind is a hassle if you are using a topshot. The topshot knot will hang on the levelwind.

And truth is that a quality reel with a narrow spool and you are fishing in less than 100 feet of water a level wind is not needed. Just reel it up It will be fine.

The saltiga 10 is a sweet reel, if your dad doesn't mind treating himself that is where I would go.

I got a Torium this year which I like for the $.

No knot is getting stuck in the torium levelwind. The new black ones are very good, I have one, and if the MP has one you just know that it was thoroughly researched and tested.

Get the smallest one available.
