Decided to give the trout a rest and try a new smallie spot.  Ended up getting 5 smallies between 10 and about 20 inches on poppers.  Also jumped a a slot striped bass on a popper that had the drag screaming and the 7 wt doubled over.  Don't think the little bass popper hook would have held up on that one, lol.

Good thing I made the call to go out with just a fly rod today with winds blowing 20-30!

I was involved (only as a witness) in an incident of crab on crab violence

Not today, Cannibalistic Crustacean…not today.

PS

Crabbo was safely released on his own recognizance

Don't really have a good imitation for these . I just might trim the top and bottom hackle and wings on a couple . Maybe hit it lucky and have a good spinner fall this evening and nail a couple of brookies on top. P5270078.JPG.04f7983c11dbbd17bcc150f448ffef67.JPGP5270075.JPG.333751dd0a8e7bd48dd82a8436d42e2f.JPGP5260058.JPG.d74daf14bbc7e087b371b34f516521cf.JPGP5260055.JPG.6d56672b216084dae831e78f4c6358a4.JPGP5260054.JPG.ac0c61f712efb9a1ebf714f0542aa4ce.JPGP5270070.JPG.4626cb327441ed80f21be0e4ff43a537.JPGP5270072.JPG.0a7af5c971616163d274dab18e3a0d84.JPG

What kind of bug is that?  I was swimming in a river up in NH and saw those floating by.  Asked the guy at the fly shop, he said Quill Gordon or Hendrickson.  Said for Brooke’s didn’t matter which one I went with.  Ended up grabbing the Quill Gordon and tree it to a little rising brookie.  Not much of a trout guy, so I was happy with the results for a quick hour long session away from the family.

A Quill Gordon's a match for that Mayfly. I fished one the next morning with the bottom and top hackle plus wings trimmed off . If there were naturals around I didn't notice them . I got a couple brookies and a few fallfish .

Great day getting my blood/salt ratio back to equilibrium.  Took about 20 cast with the flyrod, but no love.

Bambi is sleeping after a swim?

Dead unfortunately. I think I interrupted what was likely coyote killing it as I walked down the trail at 4:30 this morning.

The doe was stomping around and not happy with my presence, so I gave her a wide birth.

Took the wife out for a drive in the Sierra yesterday, did a bit of scouting in some areas I hadn’t been to and found a good spot for a late tailgate lunch. Ended up fishing for about an hour at a stream at 7000’. Caught my first cutthroat and a dozen or so wild rainbows. Water was gin clear and cold, was able to sight fish the pools with nymphs and dries. What a blast, left my phone in the car so no fish pics, but it felt good to fish New water and be successful.
pic is from upstream of where I fished.
