Are children still being taught basic Arithmetic?

I like comparing methods to solve math problems with my kids.  Challenges me and challenges them.  All these different systems in vogue, one of them may be better than the way we learned.

Let's just face it we're doomed, but will be dead soon enough , so who cares lol

If you die with a tape measure in your hand, will they let you in Valhalla?

Are they? Do they teach anything without using a computer?

Look, I get it, I'm old. Big deal.

You can't fundamentally transform the country without dumbing down the population first; they're winning...

 There is some truth to that. Just not the fractional thing though. I can rattle them out with barely a thought.

It is also said that men tend to marry women that emulate their mothers. :scared:

I 100% resemble that comment.  The ones that didn't have that trait were crazy, but fun to try on for size.

Shooting a coon in a 60ft tree out of a boat in the dark holding a flashlight can be tricky. ..

How about a 19 year old that can't divide 12 by 3 without a calculator? A 34 year old woman ( with a degree!) that cannot answer how many inches in a foot?

My only hope is that after a year of home schooling, parents are smart enough to realize how broken the schools are.

:v:

I find the issue is more of the parents than the school. Can have kids go to the same school and be able to do the basics, others not.

Without the parents reinforcing it with their kids, they won’t see it as important enough to care.

went to catholic school for 5 years, never feared the nuns, they were more merciful than my parents.

Do they teach times tables? Long division?

Most importantly, fractions?

How to read a ruler?

Damn, they keep trying to put these kids in the field with me, but, other than physical labor, they really are not much help.

I figure a guy that wears a tape measure on his belt knows how to use it. I was wrong.

3 guys so far, from 3 different backgrounds, all in their 20's.

And I asked a couple of the girls in the office, too. None of them know how to do fractions. None of them were capable of adding  9/16 to an inch inch and a half.

None of them.

I asked the kid to set up the table saw to rip a piece down to 1.5 inches. Nope. It was very quiet for like 10 minutes. I went outside to figure out what was taking so long, I'm pretty sure he was bleeding from the ears trying to figure it out.

So I guess you could say these people don't measure up?     :D
