THIS OLD FLY

I don't fish spinning gear much, but I really enjoy lurking on the THIS OLD PLUG thread on the tackle collector forum. I found myself wishing there were a similar thread for vintage/old/beat up flies. It may not take off, but worth a shot. SOL regulars probably have some great old stuff.

I don't have much, but here is an unfished surf candy and sea habit, maybe late 90s or early 2000s. I like the yellowed epoxy.

I used to have a bunch of banged up flies stuck in the spring part of my desk lamp on my tying desk. One day a buddy of mine was over and questioned “is that the repair shop?”

I said no, that is the hall of fame.

Nice idea to post the "oldies but goodies".

Surprised this thread didn't get more attention.

I don't get to fish the salt much, mostly fresh water for trout and bass, but I do enjoy lurking on here on SOL.

I was lucky enough to score a bunch of old Tuttle Devil Bugs a few years back in a box of fly tying stuff I picked up at a yard sale.  Probably got close to 2 dozen ranging in size from @ 8 or 10 to 2/0.  Looks like a heck of a lot of work to tie and paint them.

Is this one you tied or one from those you got with the tying materials ?

There are tyers and then there are fishermen. A few dozen guys from a club I’m in can’t fish any more due to age health problems but they still enjoy tying .Most say “ they are  better at it now “ with more time and patience in their life .

Thanks for sharing

This was one of the flies in the box of materials.  I wouldn't even know where to begin to tie a fly like that.

Here's a few more patterns that were in the box:

They would be a great framing project in a shadow box style.

Do you have any more of his bugs that were painted? Construction of these are not all that difficult. The painting schemes of these has been problematic to find period examples to go by. The only examples of that have been examples of art work for advertising . Helpful for what it was but don't give the feel of what it would've been how they were really painted, Like the first bug you posted I knew exactly how that was achieved at a glance.

I've had these for a long time, at least since 2000, maybe even a bit earlier. I think I found them at a yard sale? I don't remember. They were at my parents house and I picked them up recently. I have no idea if they're anything special. I also picked up some of my old stuff. I'm going to look for those later.

There are a few more painted ones, I will post some pics when I get a chance, but I think that first one I posted was the best of them.

Looks like tying them would be pretty time consuming.  I really enjoy my time at the vise, but I think those would try my patience.

Some of my older stuff. The bagged flies probably go back to the early 90s. The shrimp & crabs are from the late 90s or early 00s, from the old crab walk days at ibsp.

A friend of mine found these

Any idea on the age of those?  50's/60's maybe judging by the cellophane packaging?
