Frugal Fisherman
It's not like most fish change colors from silver to black after the sun goes down....or maybe that's what happens to bunker at night

Throw it out there… let it sink to the middle of the water column to start and then reel slowly. Then try the top half of the water column, then slow it real down and work near the bottom. If they like that bait that night they will react, if nothing in a half hour try something else. Blurple SP minnow is a good bait but I prefer it around dusk and false dawn. Night time I like the aforementioned black darter, sluggos, needles… when the full moon is out lighting up the sky switch it up. You’d be surprised how good their eye sight is. Good luck Wait, you have darters that sink? I may have mistakenly asked this question in response to another post. The black darter is one of my night time favorites though. Fisherman888 1 Smoke 'em if you got 'em, we're going down

Popular Post Highlander1
Of course it depends on water conditions, ambient and moon light and location. I'll assume your fishing familiar spots. For open beach fishing, my first few casts are from the beach, I don't step in the water for the first half dozen fan type casts (I'm assuming its an empty beach). Too many times fish can be right at your feet, don't spook them by splashing and trudging through waters that might hold fih, many times the first few casts result in a hook-up, those fish were already there. As for specific lures and colors, I also believe in dark lures on dark nights, however, that is the way I learned and between being brainwashed and developing habits, I fished that way 90% of the time. I think many of us suffer from old school beliefs, some which are accurate, some just junk science. Many think that only the last 2 hours of incoming tide are worth the effort, don't ever believe it, particularly consider locations. So, I have a few plugs in the starting line-up that get the first hour or so of action, I will assume we are talking about conditions and locations that are present most times you fish. So, some folks like the big plug for big fish theories, another old school thought that may or may not be factual, when you catch large on a big plug its surely factual, so does that make it a pipe dream when you catch large on a teaser? I think not, its all up to the fish with a brain the size of a pea to determine if it wants to feed or not and if it looks appealing, your choice means little. After you catch large on little stuff and large on big stuff and small on both size lures, you scratch your head and do what you like. Back to the starting line up, I perfer' smaller lures overall, 1/2 to 2 oz.is my comfort zone, with 1 oz.being perfect. Usually, I begin with a Black, Blurple or Sardine style Yozuri Mag Darter, then a 5" Red Fin 16A Bomber or SP, maybe a Chicken Scratch although Black and Smoky Joe are my fav's, a small needle a Choopy Eel (Green/White)is loved as is a Gibbs Stubby, then a Storm 1 oz. Swim Shad in Bunker or White, maybe a small Danny or Surfster to follow. If after an hour or so, its not happening, bucktails in white or black, always with a trailer (rubber grub tail), this is still a weak spot for me, I wait too long to use the bucktail, it comes from early learnings when I only fished bucktails in heavier waters and winds or when bluefish showed in numbers. When rubber shads made their appearance and became popular I found how productive they can be, and bucktails are very similar so I started using them more frequently and found out how productive they can be. I always covered the surface well, sometimes the action is deeper and bucktails and rubber can be the answer. Then we get to stuff you find out that makes no sense, parrot colored lures, wonderbread colored, pink and why sometimes in some places only those colors will work. Try em', at one time black w/ orange belly Bombers were the ticket, then a gold flash bomber was needed Now, almost 50 years into the science of surf fishing has me convinced there is no science. I'm still influenced by the dark lure on dark night although don't trust it, tide charts should mostly be ignored or used in spots that the water movement means something, in NJ outfront its usually only a difference of 2-3 ft.of water height, means nothing, moon phases are over rated although full moon nights with bright light were never on my list of favorites, I'd look for cloud covered full moon nights instead, don't let me deter you from full moon nights, just my experiences. Confidence means something, things do work better when you think they will. So, the answer is fish when you want and can, as often or not that keeps you satisfied. Juanma25
bucktails, Blurple SP and lunker city swim baits have been my go to. Been fishing a lot of needles this fall and doing good with the smaller SS needles and a SA flat glide needle. MAGA

For me, that rash is a reminder that the hook points are being dulled and they all need to be sharpened even on the lighter plugs where the effect is harder to see. Black sharpie smeared in there helps the confidence. ;-) bdowning

Frede
If I know there's a specific bait around I'll "match the hatch." If no bait around (that I know of anyway) I'll prospect with needles. Next up, swimmers in whatever color I have confidence in at the time. I fish white in the dark all the time...I think I've broken myself away from only throwing dark at night. Paddle tails usually come next but sometimes I feel better going with when them right after needles. I always walk along so I cycle through the bag as I go. Salt air provides the levity needed for survival.
