night owl
Do these things have the ability to change the shape/profile of their body in order to blend in better with their surrounding? I ask this because in the 1st pic the body of the mantis is toothed and this makes it blend in with the leaves on the plant. The mantis may be a little hard to find but you'll find it if you really look. This pic was earlier in the year. None of the pics I saw online shows a mantis with a toothed body. Clearly this one in the 1st pic had a toothed body. The second pic I took a few days ago and you can see that the body is not toothed. Both of these animals were in Massachusetts. What say you? Seadogg
It looks like the one in the first picture is younger and hasn’t developed wings. The wings shield the abdomen in adults making the body smoother and more cylindrical in appearance. gregwa
night owl
Maybe it's as simple as that. When they are young/wingless they have a toothed body.
HanoverStriper
Cool pics. I've seen quite a few of them this year. I'm no mantid/mantis expert, but in just doing a little research, I believe the brown one is a Chinese Mantid, and the Green is a European Mantis. giant basshole
The toothed one is the weed mantis, this genus is known to protect marijuana plants from known enemies.
