Rod Ideas for Open Beach

I think I want a new rod.

I fish open sand beaches in central Ocean County.

Last fall, I bought an 8' ODM surf rod.  Used it today in great conditions.  However, it feels odd to me.  A lot of handle and not a lot of rod from reel to tip.  I can't seem to get comfortable with it.  Can't get in a good position holding it.  Seems short for putting between legs, too long a handle for me to stick it in my hip and a bit unbalanced  to freehand.  Also, seems a little stiff to impart action on light bucktails and poppers.

My other rod for the fall run is a 9'6" Airwave elite.  I'd rather not use that all season as it seems to be a bit much for this time of year.

Not sure if I should be looking at a 7'6" or 8' inshore rod or a longer surf rod.

I think I might want a longer, maybe 'whippy', light rod, in $150 price range.  Does one exist?  I haven't been to any shops yet to try things out.  Will check out Grumpy's soon, though.

Any recommendations?  Okuma rockaway 10' ML?

You're biased!  But now I can trust you!

Will a Slammer 4500 fit it?  Or, too heavy?

I may be wrong person to ask for this

My 12' has Okuma Rockaway 6K on it (what a surprise)

11' has a entry level Daiwa 4K, StrikeForce

Both 10' have Okuma IRT 40 reels

9' has a Okuma Rox 30 and

8' and SP 8' 6" have a Abu Silver 40

LOL

I wear OKUMA hood  on cold days, Okuma black and blue Tshirts, white Okuma sweat for night fishing and Okuma sleeves for sun-days fishing.

Looking for Okuma sneakers and okuma pants.

PS

Did I mention that I may like OKUMA products?

St Croix Mojo 8' could work for you.  I have the Mojo as a backup to my 8'6" ODM Frontier X/Slammer 4500 which is my main setup.  The Slammer 4500 is perfect on either rod....imo of course.

How do you like the SP rods?  Are they actually like LMB bass rod actions?

Grumpy's rod was designed as a do-all for that general area of surf fishing and is $180 retail. Haven't fished it personally

The original is a 9' 1/2-3/5ish and they just released a beefier 10'6" 2-6ish.

ODM also has the one piece 7'6" "Backbay" model in the DNA series but that is going to have the same "little bit of rod above the reel" feeling if you feel that way about the 8'. I have the 8 I think it's the most versatile piece of gear I have.

If you can find them, the discontinued St Croix Tidemaster series has several powers in 8'. One of my favorite series for versatility in fresh and salt
