Silly hook questions

We use large circle hooks.  Often sizes 8/0 up to 12/0.  So how is it the off shore guys get away with much smaller hooks?  Don't the tuna guys use something like 4/0 hooks?  And they can catch way bigger fish than our surf caught stripers and drum.

Also, how is it that we barely hook a chunk of bait on those large hooks (so the hook has room to work); but, the off shore guys will bury those smaller hooks inside the body of a ballyhoo?

The stuff that keeps me awake at night... :wee:

That is a great question.

I remember when I worked in OC, they would run 25 pound fluorocarbon and tiny (like 3/0) mutu circles completely hidden in chunks when the tuna would get wary in the summertime. I don’t know how it worked but they came back with fish.

Even for drum fishing some folks run those heavy wire Mustads with the narrow gaps and catch fish. If you can’t get your thumb in that gap how does it get around their jaw??
