72 Days till CHRISTMAS

Did you know? Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, created the very first strand of electric Christmas Lights. During the Christmas season of 1880, these lights were strung around the outside of his Menlo Park Laboratory.

Edward H. Johnson put together the very first string of electric Christmas Tree lights in1882. Johnson, Edison's friend and partner in the Edison Illumination Company, hand-wired 80 red white and blue lights and wound them around his family Christmas Tree.

Many people at that time were afraid of electricity and it would take almost forty years for electric Christmas lights to become the tradition we all know and love.

71 Days till CHRISTMAS

Did you know? Great news everybody. "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" first aired on October, 27 1966. Last year Apple TV took over control of the BIG 3 Holiday Peanuts Specials knocking ABC out of airing these family favorites. The only way to watch was to buy into Apple TV.

PBS has secured the rights to air all three holiday shows for one night only. On Sunday October 24, 2021 at 7:30pm. It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown will air for all to see for free. A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas will air at later dates.

If you are like me then there was never any worry because you all have the boxed set of the Charlie Brown trilogy.

Did you know? Valentine Davies was an American film and television writer, producer and director. He won the Academy Award for best story in 1947 for Miracle on 34th Street.

Davies got the idea for the story while standing in a long line during the Holiday shopping season. The long lines and chaos left him to wonder what Santa would've thought about such commercialization.

Did you know? Remember the big burp in the movie ELF? It was a real burp but it wasn't from Will Ferrell. The super long belch was actually recorded by a famous voice actor. The long burp was recorded by Maurice LaMarche better known as the voice of Brain in "Pinky and the Brain"

LaMarche's vocal contributions to the film were uncredited, but his belch will live on in cinematic history.

Did you know? The all time favorite cookie during the holidays is the Chocolate Chip. The cookie was invented by chef Ruth Graves Wakefield in 1938. Ruth was the owner, operator of the Toll House Inn, in Whitman, Massachusetts. The Toll House Inn was a popular restaurant that featured home cooking. A popular desert was a butterscotch nut thin cookie served with ice cream. Ruth wanted to offer something different so she came up with The Toll House Cookie.

Ruth added broken bits of Nestle semi-sweet chocolate into her cookie dough and came up with her masterpiece. Ruth Wakefield gave her recipe to Nestle and was paid with a lifetime supply of chocolate chips.

Did you know? In 1895, US President Grover Cleveland sponsored the first electrically-lit Christmas Tree in the White House. Back then Christmas Lights were too expensive for the average person; as such, electric Christmas Lights did not become the majority replacement for candles until 1930.

66 Days till CHRISTMAS

We are 1/3 the way through the 99 day countdown.

Did you know? How Christmas Gift Wrapping Paper came to be? In 1917 the Hall Brothers sold tissue paper during the holiday season for gift wrap in their shop in Kansas City, Mo. Until they ran out. They quickly turned to something they had on hand, envelope liners; they sold out again, and a few years later they were printing their own decorative gift wrap. It was the first product the Hall Brothers made other than greeting cards to sell in their Hallmark stores.

65 Days till CHRISTMAS

Did you know? The "Silent Night" of the Bavarian Alps is suddenly pierced by the sound of gunfire! Gunshots echo throughout the Berchtesgaden region of Bavaria at midnight on Christmas Eve. the 1200 members of the festive shooting club known as the Berchtesgadener Boller spread out in the Berchtesgaden Valley in their traditional costumes to welcome the Christ Child at the stroke of midnight. Using old fashioned pistols and small hand held cannons called Boller, they fire off a total of about 7,000 rounds. A week later they repeat their noisy custom for New Year's Eve. This custom has been going on since 1666. Back then it was believed that the loud noises would drive away evil spirits. When done for Christmas, the custom is also known as Christkindlanschieben. 64 Days till CHRISTMAS

Did you know? Leon Hess born in Asbury Park, New Jersey in 1914 was the founder on the Hess fuel oil company. The 19 year old Hess was unable to afford college so he purchased a second hand 615 gallon oil delivery truck and began delivering fuel oil to homes in Asbury Park. By 1937 he owned five additional trucks and a year later he purchased facilities to unload barges and tankers.

In 1964, just four years after opening the first Hess branded gas station Leon Hess decided to offer families a fun, high quality and affordable toy for the Holidays as a goodwill gesture to customers. He wanted to offer it at a price families could afford with batteries included - a concept that endures to this day. The first toy tanker truck designed after his first delivery truck sold for $1.39 in 1964. That toy truck today is now worth $2,500.00
