Go for it. My 5500SS is my loaner when I take out friends. Old workhorse that I bought new in 1996.  Serviced as needed, put in one dog and gear, that’s it.

Excellent reel, clean and lube , clean drag disc or replace . A work horse , paint and scratches mean nothing, Don’t make that quality any more :rav:

4500 is a good all-around size that will do almost all you need. It may be a little heavier than today’s reels and may not cast as far, but it’s built tough, will always be a solid back-up or a starting line-up. A respectable reel for any jetty.

I have a Penn 750 SS and a 850SS, there still maintained and in great shape. Both will go to my son inlaw who is just starting surf rishing.

I really like the 4500SS, it's a simple, easy to maintain and unlike more "modern" reels parts are still available. My one recommendation is to remove the bail trip mechanism, and use as a manual bail. The bail  frequently closed at the worst possible time and cost me a few nice lures.
