I recently acquired this fly rod in a trade and I don't think it's ever been used. I plan on using it this fall in and around Sandy Hook.

I'm looking for some advice on setting this up for surf fishing. My questions are:

1- Is this rod adequate for central jersey surf fishing

2- Reel  I'm leaning towards a Colton CRG 810. Is this good or should I be looking at something else.

3- What line should I start out with

I mainly fish at night out front. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Paul

Should be fine.Reel...............so many choices.I'll let others chime in.I still use older models mostly. My old Sci-Anglers system 2 9/10 has taken a beating for a long time.My expensive reels are resting comfortably in their pouches.No....I don't know why.:banghd:

Shadow, thanks that's the kind of info I'm looking for. Will a used Orvis Battenkill or something similar hold up in the surf. I don't have to have the latest or greatest.

I presume you're referring to the Disk Battenkill. Well a friend of mine had that reel on when he landed a 36lb Atlantic Salmon on a Quebec river and my wifecaught quite a few up to 15 lb using that reel so I venture to say it's strong enough for the fishing you intend to do. And I've been using my old Orvis DXRs (same disk drag system as the Battenkill) in the salt for the past few years and they are holding up very well. But I do rinse them off in fresh water after each outing.

Suave, I don't know what the different drags are that Battenkills come with. But it sure sounds like it will work for me. Thanks

Keep it clean.A little maint. and freshwater wash will keep it running for a long time.Like I said prior. My 1st saltwater reel [1980] is a Pfleuger 1498 that I still use today on the beach too.The little slag metal tensioner to pressure the drag disk broke off years ago.I still have a blast "fingering" the line off the reel as a fish runs. Some folks I fish with think I'm nuts! "The shoe fits"!:howdy:

So I'm in the nut club as I decided to set up one rod with an old Hardy Marquis Salmon 1 and that's the rod I'm fishing most of the time. But at least I have a palming rim so I'm up one on you! And I love the sound that reel makes when a striper pulls out line.
