Foul weather jacket recommendation

My current foul weather jacket is from the old Cabela’s guidewear collection which I bought over 15 yrs ago. It’s starting to show wear from years of carrying a shoulder surf bag and doesn’t hold up to heavy downpours as well anymore.

Time to shop for its replacement. It’s been years since the the development of Gortex, and garments that contain it are still pricey. I’m on the fence whether to get something that contains neoprene, as neoprene ends up being unbearably hot, at least that’s what I experienced in my neoprene waders.

Looking for a jacket priced between $180 - $220. Came across the Stormr R215MF-01 Mens Typhoon Jacket which has a neoprene core and I believe a nylon shell. Description states the shell repels water.

One thing that has me puzzled about the jacket; it claims to be windproof/waterproof but states the finish is “water repellent”.

 

Does anyone have experience with this jacket, or can recommend a jacket that actually keeps out the water for the price range indicated above? Not interested in anything Frog Tog, and Grundens quality isn’t the same as years ago.

I do not have experience with this particular jacket, but relative to the "water repellent finish" I would assume it has a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating on the shell. This helps to bead up the water and not soak the underlying fabric, even though that fabric may actually be waterproof itself. If the fabric starts to soak it can lead to problems. You can even refresh older jackets with a spray-on DWR.

I have that StormR Typhoon jacket.  I've had it since they first came out.  I've had no issues with it.  Keeps me warm and dry on cold days.  Of course you still need proper layers under the jacket.  It's neoprene just like neoprene waders.  It repels water but I assume eventually that will wear away.  Best jacket I have though is a Grudens full rubber.  I've had it 20 years.  Can't speak to their stuff now like you have mentioned.

StormR Typhoon jacket. I bought it on sale from Tackle direct 2 years ago. I love it . I biught a 3x, it fits me a little big, but I like that. it works. I think stormR has a size chart on there web site. Make sure it's the new style.

You guys are selling me on it. TD has it for $208 currently.

I’m an “XL”, would I need a 2X if I wear a sweatshirt under it, or do you feel the XL is sufficient?

I don't know. I myself because I'm 71 and over weight I like to layer underneath the jacket. I normaly take a 2x jacket. Look up there website see if they have a size chart. Also search the jacket pros and cons. I have a larger waist now so I go larger for comfort also.Mine is the new jacket they came out with about two years ago.  They made the lining better I think. But for $169.00 I couldn't let it go. I may have had points also to use with Tackle direct. Might have been 200 bucks list.

Tough to say. I guess so. I’m 6’3 around 170lbs and got a large. Mine fits fine. In November and December I usually only wear under armor and a thermal/flannel shirt under neath and of course waders.
