Max and Grande blow away anything those dildos try to use on the broadcast. If you haven't tried it Green Teamers you're missin' it! How one Ime Udoka chess move unlocked Celtics Game 4 comeback win and changed the series against Bucks MILWAUKEE — Robert Williams was hurt, Jaylen Brown was in foul trouble, Grant Williams and Daniel Theis were struggling and the Celtics season was suddenly on the brink of collapsing in the third quarter of Game 4. Boston was facing a 10-point deficit with one minute remaining in the frame as Brown was sent to the bench with his fifth foul following a surprising blocking foul call that was overturned into a charge. With limited options at his disposal from a personnel standpoint and Giannis Antetokounmpo rolling for the second straight game offensively, Ime Udoka had a big decision to make. The Celtics needed to find a way to rally from down double digits and they would need to do it without their second-best scorer for a large chunk of it. Udoka had been put to the test often in the Celtics turnaround in the second half of the season and passed those exams with flying colors. However, some crucial subtle moves down the stretch helped unlock what was the best offensive fourth quarter we will probably ever see in Celtics postseason franchise history. Benching Grant Williams and Daniel Theis The latter choice was an easy one to make. Theis got an understandable opportunity once Rob Williams was a pregame scratch but this was not his night from an offensive standpoint (0-of-5 from the field). The Bucks were largely ignoring him defensively and he was letting them get away with it by misfiring on jumpers. The trickier gamble was moving away from Grant Williams, who only played one minute in the final 15 minutes of Game 4. Williams was undoubtedly struggling Monday night but his defense on Giannis Antetokounmpo had been an incredible resource all series long. Boston was already sacrificing plenty of size without having Rob Williams in the lineup and G. Williams had played well enough in the postseason that a good case could have been made to stick with him. However, Udoka saw a Williams’ in Game 4 whose shooting and touch was regressing to the mean after a red hot first couple games against the Bucks. He was 2-of-11 from 3-point range in Milwaukee on a majority of wide open looks and his presence made it easier for the Bucks to keep multiple bigs on the floor and get away with it defensively. It was time for Udoka to roll the dice and move away from one of his best Giannis stoppers for a potential tradeoff. Dusting off the three-guard lineups This was quite the chess move on a night the Bucks were crushing Boston on the offensive glass with second chance points and finishing lobs against their size mismatches. However, the decision to go small set the table for Boston finding the best version of their offense for the first time all season with a sensational offensive fourth quarter. With Brown in foul trouble, Udoka went with a three-guard lineup (White/Pritchard/Smart/Tatum/Horford) for the first six minutes of the final frame. That five-man unit had not played a minute together all season long and the three-guard combo of White/Smart/Pritchard had played just eight minutes together in the regular season. Udoka had tried going small more with Pritchard in small-ball lineups in the first half of the regular season but Boston’s defense had suffered tremendously with those early on, causing them to largely be tossed aside. Pritchard’s second half resurgence got him back in the rotation but the team was rolling with bigger defensive-minded lineups, making the smaller look simply not a needed luxury. However, with Boston’s season on the line, Udoka turned to the small look, hoping it would punish the Bucks size and length advantage and open up the floor for Boston’s scorers. The group did just that, outscoring the Bucks 22-14 in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter before Jaylen Brown checked back in the game with five fouls with six minutes remaining in the contest. Horford did a lot of the damage during his career night but make no mistake, the additional spacing provided by Boston’s guards helped ensure Horford got wide open looks and Tatum got favorable matchups against smaller defenders later in the frame when the Bucks subbed out Lopez (more on that later). From there, Boston’s best five lineup (White/Smart/Tatum/Brown/Horford) closed the door on the Bucks, erupting for a game-winning 15-2 run midway through the frame against Milwaukee’s bigger lineup with Brook Lopez and Giannis Antetokounmpo on the front line. The duo wasn’t able to keep up with Boston’s uptempo group in crunch time. Meanwhile, Boston’s defense stood tall despite their height disadvantage with Derrick White shining brightest by forcing the Bucks to shot 0-of-12 from the field while serving as a primary defender. Marcus Smart also stepped up as a regular primary defender on Giannis Antetokounmpo, helping to limit him to just six points in the final frame even without Boston’s usual size around him to help. Ultimately, the run caused the Bucks to pull Brook Lopez from the lineup and match up to go small, opening the door for Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart to put the Bucks away late with clutch baskets in the paint against a less imposing Bucks defense. Final Thoughts On a day when Ime Udoka placed just fourth in the NBA Coach of the Year voting, he showed once more why he is undervalued in the NBA world. This has been an epic battle of a series through four games against two heavyweights but Udoka may have unlocked the key to the series by turning back to a smaller lineup he has gone away from for months.
