Permethrin treated clothing/bug net. 20% Picaridin for exposed skin. If I'm using the pica on my hands over the treated fingerless gloves I'll use a lip gripper, the stuffs not very toxic to fish but it's not non-toxic either.

Deet products will always work best but this works pretty good as a deet free alternative.

Thermacell. Bit of a pain to use when fishing tho.

I had a thermacell in a little holder with a belt clip.

It worked good for mosquitoes.

Nope, if you want real bug repellent.

Its gotta have a large amount of deet in it.

False.

Picaridin is Nylon/Mono friendly and works just as well and last just as long as deet.  Check out Sawyer Picaridin Spray.  Lemon Eucalyptus works too but you definitely need to reapply more frequently.

Anything above 30% deet is a plasticizer and will melt and degrade nylons- Sunglass frames, rain jackets (dont put your jacket on after putting on spray...you'll notice the cuffs and neck start to delaminate), fishing line, gear bags, etc.

I’ve tried many different non-DEET based repellents and I haven’t had any success with them. I tried the Sawyer with picaridin and the bugs were on me like Cookie Monster on a sack full of Oreos. I wonder if the somehow picaridin is more dependent on your body chemistry interacts with it?  A friend swears by Ranger Ready which is also picaridin based
