Been looking to pick up a VR50 some time soon. I mainly pier fish, targeting redfish, speckled trout, spanish and king mackerel, pompano, and other inshore gulf of mexico species.

Would this reel be overkill for what I'm targeting? Any other spinning reel recommendations that would fill those needs?

I used mine for sea trout on the east coast of Florida. Worked out quite well.

I have had one that I won in a raffle, and have fished for 2 years now.  Love it; solid; reliable. A small, light reel with big backbone. I would not think it is an over kill from functionality perspective for your noted fish, but if you are talking about cost vs. alternatives in "over kill" I pass.

What size line do you fish on yours, and how much does it hold?

my stradics perform wonderfully for me pier flipping jumbo spanish on a c3000 and a kings and spanish on my 4k. Better drag smoother feel less line and you wont look as cool as with a vr50.

What i want a vr50 or vs100 for is summer wet wading at high tide when I have to almost swim under docks to keep wading the shoreline. But for 20ft above water seems unnecessary.  My couple cents.

That's what I was thinking.. having the vr50 might be a little overkill for what I need. They just look really damn cool to me haha

Makes good sense. Not a lot of point in buying a sealed reel that will never be within 10 feet of the water haha.

I put Suffix 832 -30 LB. test on it, and it probably took 300 to 320 yards of braid

Definitely a sweet little reel though. Another upside is the manual pickup if you're a fan of that.

I picked one up last year and have yet to really put it to work. I spooled mine with 15# power pro and use it for my winter fishing. Put it on a 8’6” rod.

It doesn’t really fit most my fishing requirements but it is a nice little reel.

Looking to get rid of it?

Aweseome reel until it isn't.

The post which rides in the traverse guide found it's way out during the last few cranks of a fight with a small fish.

Locked it up.

Made for an adventure to get it open.

I bent the traverse guide flat....

Fished it.....same failure.

Had it serviced....now it's noisey and geary insead of nice and smooth which it once was prior to the defect.

Gotta send it back out.

Worhe mentioning.....second time it locked up I said EFF it and wrenched on the rotor....that may have been one of the worst feeling sensations I ever experienced with a fishing reel.....grinding the gear's teeth......like fingernails on a chalkboard.
