From what I understand and unless I'm mistaken, Walter may have used the wood from children's bowling pins to make his first plugs, before he located an alternate source for wood. I don't believe that he actually made bowling pin shaped fishing lures as this is the only one I have ever seen like this, but I may be wrong. This lure that I have was with a handful of prototypes that I acquired and I think it is just something that he experimented with.
