No dragging allowed in Peconic since the early 90’s. Used to open at midnight October 1 , a clusterfluck of epic proportions with small boats up to 80 footers. Target species were porgies , wears , blues and fluke. Glad that’s over.

I believe in recent years the east end towns but especially Riverhead have asked the DEC to allow commercial fisherman to net Bunker inside Peconic Bay at this time of year. This is to try and thin out the huge schools that end up in the western end of the bay and ultimately have a die off when the water warms.

 

I haven't read or heard anything in the news about it this season. Just my guess on why commercial boats are netting inside the bay.

If I see them again I’ll take some photos and call DEC. The boat I saw was dragging and hauling the net that looked like this:
