A tip of the hat to Rachel Marie

I came upon SOL in 2015 while searching the Internet to learn about fly fishing and fly tying for stripers. And discovered great fly tiers for the salt, a new world for me, including of course BobPop, the grand master. A mong those, Rachel Marie (Andrew W.) who was heavily into tying some of BobPop's Fleyes (Semper Fleyes, Bucktail Deceivers, Hollow Fleyes, Hollow Semper etc,) creating gems and posting a lot of them.

I never met the gentleman but would have loved to do so and see him tie. He was very active on SOL until 2017 and since then... silence. I just hope he is well and still tying and that one day soon we'll see him back on SOL.

For those of you who were not around in those years and want to have a look at some of his gems, take the time to go through the "epic" (that's what Jonny King, another great tier, called it) and lenghty (26 pages) thread "Fall is here" started by Rachel Marie on September 21, 2013 on the Fly Tying Forum. It's really worth it. And it contains a few sbs by RM on how he ties his Hollow Semper, Fleye Foil Sand Eels and Flatwings.

So, with a tip of the hat to him, here are my first attempts at Hollow Semper as per his sbs. The first one on a Mustad C70S #2/0, about 7" long and the second on a Mustad S71SNP #2/0, 5.5" long.

Did you try to PM him through SOL? He might still have a hot link even if he’s not active. His surf candies were perfect.

No. As I said, I don't know him except through his posts and, if he stopped following SOL when he stopped posting in 2017, he doesn't know me or of me as I only started posting in 2018.

Unfortunately, it seems I was one of the last people to send him money for an order before things fell apart.  Hopefully, he sorts things out.  A life is much more important than an order of flies.

Luckily, another SOLer sent me some great flies to offset part of that loss, and boosted my spirits.

spoke to him over PM before he dipped. Was having marital and family issues.

Hopefully he is feeling good and back to work, moving on.

He's a great guy

Another tied and posted by RM. It is the one he did for the Hollow Semper step-by-step (with pictures) I referred to above. Beautiful.60996ecc14f20_image_redirect(13).jpeg.3268682319f60b298a43d4058a794335.jpeg

With the step-by-step for this Fleye Foil Sand Eel, RM posted this photo.609ab337f3ff8_image_redirect(3).jpeg.d98a7bacb415611422805cb9c691b3d8.jpegAs I don't have Fleye Foils, I decided to make a few of the second one with jungle cock eyes instead of fleye foils. On a Mustad C70S # 1 with two additions: wrapping pearl Bill's body braid around the hook shank and adding a topping of peacock herl. About 4" long.20210511_151159.jpg.39f3ede56b85a2355f8827aa37e9a992.jpg

On May 24, 2013, RM posted a Semper/BTD fly, the Wolverine on a thread bearing the same name in the Fly Tying Forum. Lovely fly. This is my take on it. On a Gamakatsu SP11 3L3H #2/0 hook, about 6" long.20210520_135952.jpg.1e489f27f687dfbe20a50591aaa41e8d.jpg
