VINTAGE UL Spinning Reel Help

43 posts in this topic

I have a BPS Microlite Glass UL. I love the old school looks to it and the noodle action, it makes catching bluegill and bass extremely fun when soaking worms under a float.

Im looking for a vintage reel to pair up with it. It seems like it would be a very cool and fun  little worm and float combo as well as a croaker and pinfish setup in saltwater.

Im thinking a Mitchell or a Penn 716. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

CF

I got 2 Daiwa Silver Series off ebay last week for pretty good prices.  Lil TLC and they're pretty smooth.  Same with a Penn 722z.

All for short money.  The Penn needed a crosswind block so that was pretty pricey. But there are tons of parts out there for the 716z. Just they've been a bit too pricey for me.

The 1980s Shakespeare SIGMA 2200 series 025 fishing reel are nice, no bs ultralites.  I still have on kicking around somewhere.

Penn 716 is solid and very saltwater capable, but also a bit on the heavy side.

If you can find an old Mitchell 308/408, that would be lighter.

Also the original Cardinal 3.

CoastalFreak, et al...
The Penn 720 and 722 (Z's included) all use the same plastic-nylon crosswind block. They are the Achilles heel of the reels. and are getting more difficult to find. Great little reels, except for that one part. No one ever greased the slot

I'm pretty sure the Orvis 50 was an Alcedo.

Orvis reels were made by Zangi in Italy,  Alcedo reels made by Rolandi in Italy, two different companies.
