Checked out a few spots this morning. Tide was just starting to come up at sunrise — figured it would be a good time to do some scouting.

Didn’t take long to remember why I prefer fishing open beach instead of “my own backyard.” Snagged 5 times, lost every setup. Good thing bucktails are relatively cheap.

Day break use a small spook ,you're trying to find schoolies this time of yr. If they are there they will hit the plugs. Save the jigs to a little later and not in shallow water with rocks.

I’ll have to try that at some point during the week. I had a 5’ red fin in my bag too, but decided not to throw it.

Try a Heddon spook jr 3" in any light color white is easy.  Fish up to 30" will hit that plug if they are around. You can go to Amazon which is easiest up in NE, in FL they are in all the stores.  BTW Snook love them. LOL

I've had fish this week on the smallest floating SP minnow. I have had to go at night at high water but have found some chunky larger size schoolies. Encouraged they all were healthy and well fed.

Tried south bay areas from at western li a few times in past few weeks and this weekend. Each time more people are there, from 1, to 4, to 8 other fishermen/fisherwomen each time. Nobody has been getting any bites. Too cold. I'm thinking am I doing it wrong. Is open beach better for this time of the year or the water is even colder there than bays?

Edit: ops, I was referring to south side bays.. corrected.
