recently purchased two dark matter pencils and two mad mantis pencils, after reading John Skinners column in SJ.  The bodies look exactly the same.  The weights are different though.  Jut wondering if they were made in the same factory in the far east and then they put different guts in them?  just wondering

I had the same intuition. I would say yes based on what Ive seen. My understanding is the newer Dark Matter/J&H plugs are weighted heavier than the originals/madds and or they have a heavier line now. But yeah same exact plug

HAVE YOU FISHED THEM HOW DID YOU LIKE THEM?

Okay— not my favorite pencil but not my least either. Really didn’t spend all that much time throwing them so can’t give the best review.

Loaded several 2oz Madd Mantis pencils to 2.5oz (drilled through the top, #8 shot). Casts and works great. Haven't gotten a chance to try the Dark Matter pencils.

I've been fishing the Mantis for a few seasons, it's a good pencil.

I have 3 or 4 Cordells, my fav is the redhead of course, but none of them are loaded, so they cast like potato(e) chips. The Mantis casts like a Scud missile in comparison and it's been the difference more than a few time. "...now some [fish] you just can't reach..."
