Conventional Reel on a Spinning Rod ?

its “okay” to do whatever you wanna try.

not positive, but i think on the trevala 6’6” the first guide up from the base “sticks out” to better accommodate the line coming from a spinning reel (?).  the “wrong” reel would only have a big “bend” in the line at the first guide cuz it didn’t line up as well.  if you were casting this can cause more issue.

btw.  great bassing boat rods.  love my trevalas.  some of my all time favorite rods for what they are.

I do it often also, only concern, if your running mono, coils can hang up a little on the first guide. A big fish can also make the rod roll cause the line is so far off the blank.

My only real concern is the rod bending the other way....should that even be a concern ?

Thanks

I don’t think so. Rod blanks are round and people strip spinning guides and rebuild for conventional or vice versa.

Spline?

That and the fact that tall spinning guides might make the rod want to roll over with a fish on.

that's my first thought. but more seriously....

I once remember fluking on a party boat near a guy with a conventional reel and spinning rod.

I very specifically thought to myself that day, "I heard that can snap a rod from bending the other way, I wonder if its true." Later that trip, as he swung up on a hookset, the rod became a two-piece. Seconds later he said "that's the third one this year".

Maybe he's just really unlucky? I don't know.

I build rods, not professionally but I did ask this question to a pro and he said that there will be no noticeable difference.  He felt like the whole spline thing was overrated.  I still build them with the spline in mind but really it's only so that the rod is bending with the spline not to the side so to speak.  I do build rods that work both conventional and spinning and that is based on the types of guides and the sizes.  It works well actually
