The Vaccine

Announced this afternoon by the Governor that convicted murderers, child molesters and rapists will be getting the Vax starting Monday.  Before the vast majority of the elderly, non-jailed residents.  This seems ... misguided.

Will be given at Gillette stadium starting tomorrow for first responders and at some point us old farts but who wants to travel there , what the hell :headscratch:

There's going to/might already be lots of other places in MA to get the vaccine. If not there will be soon. Doesn't MA have a site for you to register and make an appointment?

Honestly I believe this is to protect the staff.

Giving the vaccine to protect convicted felons from the virus before vulnerable citizens would be misguided.

I talked to my doctor last week. He estimated I might be eligible around the time of my next appointment in April. He said he did not know who would be giving the shots, only that his practice would not be.

Of course - the staff is no doubt vulnerable and should be vaccinated ASAP.  But they are going to vaccinate the prisoners starting Monday as well.  If the concern is that visitors come in and could be exposed, well then they should ban visitors like they have done in hospitals.

I certainly hope that the purpose of vaccinating the prisoners is not to protect their visitors.

Staff should be vaccinated. Prisoners vaccination is low priority in my opinion, but if the purpose is to protect staff than I get it.

Prisoners getting vaccinated before the general public and esp the elderly leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth. I’m assuming the reasoning is that it’s impossible to socially distance in prisons, they can’t have hand sanitizer (because they’ll drink it) but the state has some responsibility to keep them safe...  I believe that was the rationale for releasing prisoners earlier in the pandemic.

If the choice is giving them the vaccine or letting them out then I pick the vaccine. (Begrudgingly)

I’m not sure if that’s the thinking but it’s the only rational argument I can think of.

It’s still a hard decision to get behind though...

Could it be if there's an outbreak inside a prison, with prisoners essentially trapped in there, civil rights lawyers would call it "cruel and unusual punishment" and demand they be released?

No saying I agree with that, just wondering if it could explain the reasoning.

I think it's being done to keep a bad prison covid outbreak from overwhelming local hospitals. Covid burns like a wild fire through places like prisons....and when they get sick they gotta go somewhere...and then they need police outside their rooms, etc, etc. I was very against the prisoners getting jabbed first until someone explained the logic behind it.

I predict this will end up a borderline free for all before all is said and done.

I have one lung and asthma, so I think I qualify under the co morbidity status. Talked to my Dr on three occasions about getting the vaccine.  All she says us "we'll be in touch to let you know".

Really? Who's gonna call me, Dr. Sanja Gupta? When?    I have a sneaking suspicion my wife and I will be sitting on 495, with a full tank of gas, waiting for 15 hours to get vaccinated at Gillette.

They wouldn't be trapped, they would be sent, each with a police escort, to a local hospital...which they would quickly overwhelm with a fair sized covid outbreak. I believe they are jabbing prisoners to protect the community from running out of hospital beds. Otherwise it makes no sense whatsoever....

I believe(?) the reasoning is that prisons function as a sort of viral gas tank for the surrounding community. While inmates are blocked from leaving prisons(by the bars) --> no such luck with a virus. I'd have to look up the stats, but I'm pretty sure studies demonstrate that COVID easily moves to and fro .. leaving the cesspool of infection behind prison walls, then supercharging the disease rate in surrounding communities.

So (I hope to god) the reasoning is this, and more than simple "compassionate care" for our felonious friends. infected prisoners = more sickness and death for law abiding citizens on the outside

That said..the thought of vaccinating prisoners before anyone else is repulsive and ridiculous and infuriates me to no end.

There should be a website you can register on...I registered two days ago on the NJ covid website...I don't have an appointment yet but you'd likely be in group 1C with comorbidities like those. Which means you should be eligible in the pretty near future to get the jab.
