Bernie,

You were fortunate to grow up in an area where you could earn honest money by being outdoors in nature.

Joe and I weren't quite so lucky growing up.   We were too young to be allowed into the "family business". To get by,  we had to use ingenuity and guile to earn money.  What we did was go into the "protection" business.  We sold protection.  We used our neighborhood as our territory.  He and I would run around Water Street, Millbury Street, Green and Madison Street and speak with all the merchants.  We'd explain that for a nominal monthly fee, we'd make sure their businesses would run free of problems. In other words no broken windows, shop lifting, or other issues.  Most of the merchants were of the same ethnic background as us, so they understood.

I think it was at this time that Joe recognized how lucrative the insurance business is, and decided to make it his life's pursuit.

I always thought you were stuffing sausage behind the confessional at the Catholic church ?
