The “Inshore” NED rig

As we all know the NED rig in FW is fairly effective. So I thought what if this could translate into the SW game as a sand eel pattern for surf fishing. So I tried a few different applications of the ZMan Big TRD, but nothing really worked the way I wanted it to.

But now that ZMan makes a Giant TRD (6”) I thought now we have something. Being that no one (I know of) makes a heavy “salt water grade” NED jig head, I tried a bunch of different jig heads with no good results (with the exception of one that was just OK), so into the work shop I go.... Time to modify some existing stock.

The jigs I used started out as 1oz 5/0 and 6/0 cone shaped heads with a cast bait keeper, and were modified as follows.

1. Removed cast bait keeper from behind the head

2. Ground off the point of the cone flat all the way back to the hook eye

3. Tied on a bait keeper made from #7 Malin SST hardwire w/ 3/0 black thread

4. Coated bait keeper tie with UV cured acrylic

5. Paint head black with nail polish

6. Add 3/16” silver eyes

7. Coated entire head with UV cured acrylic

So now it’s off to the test tank to put em to work. Fingers crossed.....

A modified jig, they weigh just under 7/8oz.

The batch...

Fitted and ready to go, good overall weight.

Will the real NED rig please stand up....

That should work great on sandy flats. If you could get a Hurley style rat tail in the floating zman type plastic in the two tone sand eel color would be killer.

For inshore...How effective are they? I'm assuming you fish them very slow?

The jig heads look great! Would you consider selling some?

Not sure how effective yet, just finished these heads this morning...

Yes, fishing any NED rig is a slow process of stop and go jumping it across the bottom.

They would not be cost effective to produce and sell... No thanks.

I'm curious, how do you know if you have a bite fishing so slow blindly? I've never fished a ned rig

How does it fall?

In the tote full of water they go straight down with some (very, very little) glide...

They should look good (I hope) jumping across a sandy bottom, stoping them along the way to let them stand up and wag and then go again.

I plan to report back on performance once I have them in the drink for a bit...

I know.... All ZMan would have to do is make these in Redbone or Goby Bryant colors and they would be spot on IMO....

I have them in Yoga Pants (basically black), Junebug and The Deal. The Deal is the mud-brown over white color I show in the pix above and I catch a lot of fish on this color in both FW and SW with other ZMan baits... It will, should, maybe work just fine in this application. I'm sure, I hope. LOL!!!

If you stay in contact with the bait at rest, you can feel the fish pick it up...

It's normally a very light bite!

I was using some GULP sand eels this summer in a similar manner.  I straightened out a freshwater jig on a nice fish.  So I think your on to something here.

I looked at a few different jig heads and wonder if a plainshank roundball jig with a squared off face would be less labor intensive.

Tried superglue instead of the malin wire on the shank?

I know WE like them to look nice, but do the fish?

I was looking hard at getting the coppertreuse but I don't think I have the skills or patience to fish a ned rig. :(
