Does anybody know the current requirements to gain access for fishing on the pier? I was lucky enough to have had access a few years ago, but a change in command put the kibosh on it for me.

I do know, that currently due to Covid, only active service members have access to the pier fishing privileges. If you follow the base on facebook, they post updates for all base services.

Yea, I assumed Covid would play into it somehow. Although the pier is not the "holy grail" that people think it is, i sure do miss it. Made it really easy for elderly veterans like my dad to get out and enjoy the sport. Thanks for the info, ill check it out.

After the change of command, access was only given to vets with 100% disability. With covid not sure if they will just keep access for active duty only for the future. I really hope they relax the rules to what it was or grandfather everyone who already had access.

That plus make it available 7 nights a week instead of just Friday night thru Sunday.

It was the most consistant place to catch bass at night during the summer months. I;d like to see it open up more after covid is over

Once they close something, like access to fish, it usually stays that way until someone has to shake someone's elected official to shake the Navy which drags on and on and on etc. I live close to the pier and always would see the guys fishing, not any at all this year.

PM me your email address & I will send you the link with all the regs.

Would that be the regs from 2017?  Or do they have anything newer?

I think the risk to naval ops would be increased four fold if they did that.

That pier is a high value asset to our military.  It's the only place on the East Coast for Navy ships to to reload ammo.  Without it, ships would have to sail thru the Panama canal to Sand Diego or Honolulu to re-arm.  I think that would take at least two weeks at high speed.  And two weeks to get back.

All other East Coast ports have too much population to set up a temporary re-arming site.  Who wants 500 pound bombs accidentally blowing up next to their beachfront condo?  Earle has a nice security perimeter.

If terrorists took it out, it could take weeks to rebuild.  Sure, they could make a pontoon bridge for some munitions.  But that would be risky for really heavy stuff and nuclear materiel.

No Commander wants to risk that.

Cheaper for the Navy to restrict access and keep civilians a proper distance away.  But I wish it were not so.

Thanks.  I have that one.

I tried to fish from the NJ Military Academy Sea Girt last month at 5AM.

Normally I just show my Retired ID and the rent-a-guard barely raises his head.  this time he was really rude and said they were "conducting maneuvers on the beach."  I knew that to be BS.  There was no Officer Candidate School training going on that weekend.

So I said then I'll go to the fishing pier by the motor pool.

He says, "So why are you changing your story?"  I said my goal is to go fishing.  If I can't go on the beach, I'll go on the pier.

He continued to refuse and said it was only open to the public after 9AM came back later.

Not wanting to cause a fuss.  I left.  There was no elevated DEFCON level.  I'd been going there for years without a fuss.  I think he just wanted to be a jerk.

Maybe next time, I'll have him wake up the Commander.

Ended up just going to my usual haunts a few beaches north.

Biggest Fluke I ever caught was just outside the restricted zone on the Earle channel. 11.2 pounds.

It does attract some nice fish.
