Squidder vs Surfmaster

I have a couple of each. Spent several years in my teens ( a long long time ago....) casting only the Squidder, then, for some long forgotten reason, spent a few more years exclusively throwing plugs with the Surfmaster. I really love both, and I can throw either with the best , but the Surfmaster is / was something special. Big difference- ball bearings vs bushings....Comments?

Man, you're probably right! I love both the squidder n surfmaster, with polished bushings those surf masters will sing! But my squidders are hot rodded to Max so I like them s little better

I've got both of those reels, plus other old Penns and Newells... None of them maged... Don't see the need.. They cast great, with a little help from my thumb... All fantastic reels...

Takes casting talent to use them from the beech...

I'm far from a talented caster, but I get by with only an "occasional" fluff :airquote: :naughty: ...

FWIW I went from about 100 yards on the squidder to 125 yards on the Penn 980 when it came out  to about 175 yards when the Penn 525 Mag came out.

Hmmm, so you're distance (without mags) is about same as mine with mags. Hell my magnets may not be working! Lol, but good job! Are you using the plastic or aluminum spool?

Magnets don't add distance, they control the rotation of the spool. For me, casting without mags, a lot of it comes down to listening to the sound of the spool, and the line.

having owned and extensively used both penn flavors, i'll take bearings over bushings.  it's not a contest, they're all just tools.  use whatever works best for you.  i prefer a lefty squidder with aluminum spool over the finned plastic one.  i'm not after distance - i load up with 30# trilene mono.  it's all good if it gets the job done.  :)

I use 30lbs also, how much 30 lb. Can you get on a 146 squidder?

I cut the fins off my plastic spools back in the day. The ones that weren't already broken off, that is......

I've heard those plastic fin spools were noisy, true?

I love the sound of a fast turning spool!
