Yup, they are all over further south, see a ton of them on the lower Delmarva and on the way to OBX.

Not sure how hardy there are up here, though.

Edit - Here ya go on hardiness:

Zones:

Varieties for zones 6-10. Some may only be root hardy in zone 6, meaning the roots will survive the winter temperatures, but it's possible that the above-ground branches will die back completely to the ground. If this occurs, new spring growth will emerge from below ground.

It goes by both names depending on where you are:

" The traditional Southern spelling is "Crepe Myrtle" (because the delicate flowers resemble crepe paper). However, across the US, it is more commonly found as "Crape Myrtle". In Europe and Australia and other countries they use the Scientific Name, Lagerstroemia Crape Myrtle."

Crepe Myrtle

Wow! Thanks, the house we bought 3yrs. ago has one in the front yard and I've been trying to figure out what it was.It almost got cut down by the "queen" because it didn't do much and starts to leaf out late spring and bloom in August.Now…..what is the best fertilizer[pruning] and when for this plant? She's brutal when a pair of shears or cutting implement is in[or near] her hands.

We have an "agreement".She stays out of the fly tying/rod shop[vacume cleaner included] and I stay away from the yard except running the lawnmower[she criticizes me on that too].
