Battery suggestions

I love the performance and weight of the Nocqua, but have had issues with the cable connections. For me, they didn’t hold up well in salt water. Their website now offers a “sacrificial adapter” option, which makes me think that I’m not the only one with problems. The connector that went on mine is the one that is hard-wired into the battery, so I had to cut and splice in a new connector. $15, plus shipping, is a bit steep for a short piece of wire and connectors.

If you get one, I recommend being very careful with the connections around saltwater. Other than that, it’s a great performing battery.

Thank you for the info. Are there popular alternatives ? I’m brand new to the kayak game so any suggestions will help.

I feel like most batteries will have troubles with saltwater. Salt + water + electronics don't mix.

I was hesitant to get a 10Ah battery because I do spend longer days on the water and I use a fairly power draining FF (Lowrance Ti2 7inch, with 3 in 1 transducer).

I ended up getting an Amped Outdoors 12Ah lithium battery for the extra 20% capacity. I can get at least 10 hours of battery life, probably more if I play with the settings.

Plenty of people are still using lead acid batteries in waterproof boxes. Slightly heavier, but they work well. Mine is from Universal Power Group (via Amazon) but there’s not much difference between brands.

So far so good with Nocqua 10. I alternate between two. No issues so far with connections . I don't leave connections sitting in the salt water that accumulates in the front hatch of every Hobie I have owned. I also use ox-gard on every connection.

I've got the Nocqua, it does ok for 6hrs otw using the Hook5, but if you're using a larger gps/ff unit it won't hold up long.  I know a few guys who've  switched over to the Dakota or Amp Outdoors LiFePO4 Lithium battery.  I've switched to the Amp Outdoors, with their 12V12AH battery, I've gone 3 days w/o recharging the it, averaging 6 hrs/day otw, During that period going from full charge of 13.6 to 12v.  After 6 hrs w/the Nocqua, voltage usually drops from 12.4 to 11.  Not much difference in weight between the two & the Amp Outdoors w/charger is about $115 delivered.

Looks like I’m going with the amped. I’ll be running a HOOK2 5. What model battery should I go w the lifepo4 or 12v12ah ?

+3 for the amped outdoors..

I looked at lots of batteries including the nocqua and wilderness systems... I went with the amped outdoors for many reasons... I have the 12v18ah... Runs my ff from sunrise until well after dark.. charges my phone and speaker as well...  I've never drained it...

Mine sits in an elephant case K100 which fits nicely inside the hatch of my outback ..

Very very happy with the battery..

My experience has been different. I've been running a 10 amp Nocqua for two years now and it last me all day using a Lowrance TI2 7.  The only issues I have had is with corrosion on the connectors which can happen very quickly if you don't keep them clean.

Recently upgraded by setup, which includes continually running a gopro for recording, recharging phone, gopro, speaker, etc. Also, running fish finder, 360 white light (as needed) and cockpit lights (again as needed). Over the Winter looking to upgrade my setup, includes some switches, new wiring and make things slightly easier to 'plug & play' style.

Currently this is what I am using, which is a very nice light, small battery. I have it in a DIY waterproof box, that I use SAE connectors to plug in FF.

Talentcell

Looking to go larger for longer floats and perhaps multi-day trips. Even some camping.

https://www.amazon.com/TalentCell-Rechargeable-Lithium-Phosphate-LiFePO4/dp/B0824S6LB2

Several questions, do I need 24Ah? Assuming larger capacity is better, but maybe not. Also alittle concerned with the Lithium Iron Phosphate battery. I've read some stories, but overall they seem good. Once complete, looking to have a system that is removed from the kayak (complete) and plugged into the house power for recharge. Basically with switches to control different power requirements, fuses for protection and extra USB charging ports. I've watched several youtube DIY builds of varying "battery boxes", but nothing that actually captures what I am looking to do. Even though I get the concept would be same, the container would be the different.

I would use two 12 volts by 10amp Nocqua Batteries. One for the FF dedicated and one for accessories or for Day time mode put all of that on one battery.
