shaller
Any tips on keeping fiddlers overnight? I’m under the impression that there shouldn’t be any issue keeping them in a bucket with some mud and creek water but I’ve yet to try. Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sandbar1
Make sure they have a way to climb out of the standing water, otherwise your crabs will eventually die. Clbay1971
I’d stay away from mud lots of decaying stuff in it might make water toxic. Go with a wet sand.
shaller
Thanks. Got some cleaner water and some sloping exposed sand. I didn't realize how much mud I had in the bucket before. They should be fine overnight.
Tall Paul
If it is any help, at the bait shop, we put them in a large cooler with a piece of bent up wire screen and just enough water to cover the bottom. No sand or mud. We are able to keep 4 or 5 thousand alive for a week or 2. Changing the water every other day or so. Helps if you tip the cooler a little by placing a 2x4 under one end. cmdrzog
fishhappy
They are a hardy bait and always looking to escape. I use sand, a little salt water and a piece of wood.
CWitek
No water. That will kill them more quickly than anything else. Keep them cool. When I worked in a tackle shop, we just had a box/bucket of them in the refrigerator, with nothing added. The crabs come from the bait wholesaler the same way, just a package of crabs with nothing else. valentine
Agreed that water should never be used. All we ever did was keep them in a bucket which was then placed in the coolest, darkest place we could find. If we were on a boat, the bucket went in the bilge. G8trwood
Fiddlers will drown, and cool not cold. They need a bit of water to drink and clean. the water and sand get toxic from waste excretion and should be changed. Weed out dead ones. You can keep them quite a while. Then the wife gets mad the garage smells and the dog wants his pool back. 55555s
55555s
A crushed dead fiddler that "went bad" makes excellent minnow trap bait. .
C.Robin
They will definitely last a few days,if not a week , in just a bucket in the fridge.
TheSuperApe
I just keep them inside the house in a bucket With a very thin layer of water in the bottom. Usually last about a week, longer if I change the water. (*member formerly known as 'Badtothebugs')
