Under wraps

Recently checking out some surf rods , it appears that most of them do not have under wraps. Is this something new? or is it a matter of preference ?

If you prep your guide feet like you're supposed to, there is no way the guides can damage the blank. If you used a very heavy, stiff framed guide like those used on powerful saltwater rods, I would probably use an underwrap just to be safe. You want a more decorative build and ultimate performance is not priority one I see no harm, it's your rod.

Most wrappers of rods get paid by the wrap, the more wraps the more money the manufacturers pay.

Agree w/spoonplugger1, especially on DH 2 foot roller guides + it seems 2 top wraps are recommended ...

On surf rods , sometimes if the guide is not sitting right , it can groove the blank .  Today they say the rod is lighter without the underwrap.    I never underwrap fresh water rods or fly rods.
but I do saltwater rods.
