MTV is 39 years old this weekend, anyone recall the start?

Who is old enough to recall the premier of MTV? I remember having a group in front of the TV to watch and even recall the first video. Without searching who knows band and song that led off 39 years ago Saturday?

Anyway, 39 years later, there is not much left of the original concept, format or personalities. That said, on XM radio you can still hear Nina, Alan,  Mark and the little chick hosting 80s and 90s shows. The black dude died years ago. And if you thought Blackwood sounded like she gargled with sand and cigarette ashes back then, she’s worse today.  [ETA: Martha Quinn =little chick]

Another trivia question for NYC AOR radio fans: Who was Mark Goodman married to in the 1980s?

Final trivia question: What current Fox News personality was also a VJ?

Wasnt the song video killed the radio star? The second answer is Kennedy.

That is a good guess. I was going to say Sultans of Swing; Money for Nothing.

I remember some song Fish Heads Fish Heads Silly Little Fish Heads. I saw it for the first time visiting a friend in Delaware. I thought I was tripping.

There were not a huge number of videos then. In chart below, the number that looks like a fraction is (appearance#/appearances Day1).

MTV has to work with what was available which explains many songs, like Blotto's "I Wanna be a Lifeguard”

And who was April Wine and why were they played five times in the first day?

My parents tried to get MTV removed from our cable package.  I dont thin there were packages back then, and they werent able to do so.

My cousins in Garfield had MTV before we did for some reason.  I saw the Buggles opener.  Pretty big deal back then.
