Depends on what I'm fishing for.  I don't own a great variety of rod weights.  I have a couple of 5 wgts rods that I use for trout and pan fish.  Three 8 wgts, for some reason, I'm using them a bit more these  days, mainly for bass, pike and salt water.  The rods I use the most are my 6 wgts.  I've used them for trout, pan fish, bass, pike and light salt water.

6 wt. Had eight of them at one time.

Good all around weight rod for fresh and salt where I live.

Kind of the duct tape of fly rod weights in my opinion.

There ain't that much difference going down one weight. I use 9 for salt and 5 for fresh. Keep it simple.

Or for that matter up one weight.

If I had to pick one weight:  7 (so 6 thru 8wt lines)

If two:  6 and 9 (5 thru 7; 8 thru 10)

7, 6, 8 in that order depending on the quarry. I've got heavier stuff if needed, but my shoulders object. 7's are my go-to, and I hope to tangle with something that overwhelms them.
