HARPSWELL, Maine —

A woman is dead following a reported shark attack in the water off a Maine island, according to state authorities.

The Maine Department of Marine Resources confirmed the death near Bailey Island in a post to its Facebook page Monday.

According to the Maine Marine Patrol, an eye witness reported that the woman was swimming in the waters of Casco Bay, near White Sails Lane, when she was injured in what appeared to be a shark attack.

Two nearby kayakers brought her to shore, where emergency medical services personnel provided further assistance, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Coast Guard told The Associated Press.

The victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Maine Marine Patrol is investigating the woman's death. No further information is available.

Until further notice, swimmers and boaters near Bailey Island are urged to use caution and avoid swimming near schools of fish or seals.

here has only been one recorded unprovoked shark attack in Maine, New England shark expert James Sulikowski told the Portland Press Herald. Sulikowski, who researches for Arizona State University, said it's possible the shark mistook the person for food.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

For the record I get plenty of good bread. But then again, one could say I've never had good bread, so how could I know what it is? It's a tough world we live in.
