Did she attend any of the protests in Atlanta over recent weeks? Did any of her close staffers? Family members?

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced Monday that she had tested positive for COVID-19.

The 50-year-old Democrat is among the women named as a potential vice-presidential running mate for presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden.

“COVID-19 has literally hit home. I have had NO symptoms and have tested positive,” Bottoms tweeted.

She told MSNBC that she decided her family members should get tested again because her husband “literally has been sleeping since Thursday.” She said the only other symptoms she and her husband have been experienced are those similar to allergies they have.

“It leaves me for a loss for words because I think it really speaks to how contagious this virus is,” Bottoms told MSNBC. “We’ve taken all of the precautions that you can possibly take. We wear masks, we’re very thoughtful about washing our hands, I have no idea when and where we were exposed.”

Bottoms’ national profile has risen in recent months both as a mayor handling the coronavirus pandemic and amid the national reckoning on race that has followed a white Minneapolis police officer’s killing of George Floyd, an unarmed Black man, on May 25.

A first-term mayor, Bottoms issued a firm plea for peaceful protest as demonstrators gathered on downtown streets after Floyd’s killing — and urged the protesters to get tested for COVID-19. She invoked Atlanta’s civil rights history and her personal experience as the mother of Black sons. She won plaudits from progressives after firing Atlanta officers for using excessive force during the protests.

She has also been noted for earlier criticizing Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on his slowness to order Georgians to shelter in place and his quickness to lift that order.

Bottoms was an early and vocal supporter of Biden, who has been considering Bottoms as his possible vice presidential running mate in his own presidential bid.

Violence in the city has grown worse since protesters burned down a fast food restaurant where a white officer fatally shot Rayshard Brooks after he seized a stun gun and ran. Armed people have been manning roadblocks at the site and an 8-year-old girl was shot dead near the site on Saturday. At the same time, some police officers have been refusing to answer calls, angry that the district attorney has charged officers in the Brooks shooting.

Atlanta police again broke up the roadblocks at the site Monday, but that wasn’t enough for Kemp, who said he was mobilizing up to 1,000 National Guard troops after a spike in shootings in Atlanta.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Georgia:

Georgia governor declares state of emergency and calls up National Guard

Atlanta (CNN) — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on Monday declared a state of emergency and activated as many as 1,000 National Guard members.

Kemp, a Republican, said the executive order follows "weeks of dramatically increased violent crime and property destruction in the City of Atlanta."

The governor's statement says more than 30 Georgians were wounded by gunfire over the extended holiday weekend, including five people who died.

One of the five deaths was that of an 8-year-old girl who was shot while riding in a car with her mother and another person. Secoriea Turner was killed Saturday night as the car tried to enter a parking lot that had illegal barricades, police said.

The shooting was near the scene where a now-fired Atlanta police officer fatally shot Rayshard Brooks after he fought with officers and tried to run away with a stolen Taser.

"We've had over 75 shootings in the city over the past several weeks," Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said when talking about the 8-year-old's death on Sunday. "You can't blame that on APD (Atlanta Police Department)."

After the death of George Floyd in late May there were protests in downtown Atlanta, several of which were followed by looting and vandalism.

"Peaceful protests were hijacked by criminals with a dangerous, destructive agenda. Now, innocent Georgians are being targeted, shot, and left for dead," Kemp said in a statement. "This lawlessness must be stopped and order restored in our capital city."

The governor's statement says the National Guard will "provide support" at state buildings like the Capitol and the Governor's Mansion so state police can increase patrols.

According to CNN affiliate WSB, authorities said 60 to 100 people went to Georgia State Patrol headquarters early Sunday morning and some used bricks or fireworks to damage the building.

Guard troops will also be stationed there, the governor said.

The mayor has lost control of her city, and would make a good VP?  Only in Joe Biden's America.  I admit to being skeptical as to the good mayor's diagnosis.  If she truly does have Covid-19 I wish her a speedy recovery and a return to private life.  Passing the buck and blaming Trump for black on black violence as she did on CNN recently, proves she has no ideas or answers.

I suspect her recent diagnosis involved political expediency. Now that she has assumed the cover of victim status, she will avoid any condemnation regarding her job performance.

The citizens of Atlanta deserve the violence she has helped to provide them. She has taken no action that would offend the sensibilities of the rioters. She has given criminals free rein to carry out their daily routines without interference from law enforcement.

I think she is perfect for Biden to pick. We can all look upon her as completely capable of assuming the role should Biden fail to wake up.

Might be the last time she has to get on her knees.  You know, for the children.

Do you think he wants the mayor of Chicago to be his mate ?

Have you seen how ugly that thing is ? Even in the dark, she is just far too objectionable.

She just had her hair cut, you should have seen her before that.

She is a political figure and takes her appearance seriously.
