Hello, this is my first post here. I want to go try the canal before its too late. I already have a 10ft surf rod that my dad gave me. The reel already has braid on it but I don't know what rating it is. I plan on using it to cast plugs but my question is, do I need to attach a leader to the braid and a clip to the plug? Or is straight braid ok for casting plugs? Also, any general advice for fishing the canal would be much appreciated. Thank you.

How is it going? Any updates?  Are you fishing tomorrow?

You can get an head lamp with a red light thats easier on the eyes and on the fish. I also recommend getting some type of finger guard or tapping your casting finger as casting braid with heavier weight will cut you. Also dont pull in hot on the pull off parking lots your car will not be happy with you. And if you are fishing some type of rubber jig like and al gags put a bead of lock tight  between the lead and rubber. Other than that its a nice place to fish I think mtk can be more over whelming.
