Proper fish handling

61 posts in this topic

People in the reports thread really need to learn it.

SO many of you suck at it... (some do it properly.)

If you can't support a fish properly for a picture...don't take it....trust me...the internet doesn't need to see every fish you catch.

Maybe if you explain it to them in this manner...

You have an injury and your friend has to carry you to your house.

Would you prefer he carried you in his arms, supporting your back and legs, or drag you by your head?

Of course there will ALWAYS be those that think they know-it-all, and will ignore simple advice and logic and then wonder why "their" fishing hole has no fish...

All about respect for your quarry. In Washington state, it is illegal to remove fish which are to be released from the water. Not necessarily saying I agree with going that far, but I do agree anglers in general should be more careful with their releases.

Proper fish handling.................

- Net or gaff the fish ("lift 'em or lose 'em" is risky)

- Unhook it

- Take a pic

- Cut the gills on both sides, and the membrane behind the gills

- After a few minutes, use the washdown hose to blast out the clots to keep it bleedin' good

- Into a bucket of water to bleed out, or in the back by a scupper if it's a biggun'

- Into a cooler that is a saltwater slurry (1 smashed up 5 gallon bucket block of ice + 1-2 buckets of ocean water)

- Fillet it skillfully when you get home

- Little bit of salt and pepper, grill it up, enjoy!

Isn't it just that simple?

^^  I laughed when I saw "gaff"... thinking about someone carrying one of those to a trout stream

I gaff all my fish.  If trout fishing i use a barbed flying gaff

And the more photos you post on the internets the better angler you are

I've seen first hand how awful you are at handling fish you plan on releasing.
