XTD5500 vs Spheros SW5000

Looking for a shimano to put on my 9ft lami or 91/2 ft loomis.

Ive been a spheros fan since the "A"s came out, still have a couple A, B and a SW10000 my canal reel.

Both are close in weight. Just curious as to durability of the XTD compared to the Spheros.

Thanks Guys

Bill

In my expierence, not comparable at all.  Had both.  Spheros sw takes a beating, xtd not so much

Spheros SW is ''fully sealed'', I think the Ultegra XTD only has a sealed drag?

If it matters, the 5500 Ultegra has much more line capacity (360yds of 30lbs braid) than a Spheros SW5000 (225yds of 30lbs)

I have a Spheros SW5000 that balanced very well on a 9' Tica UEHA 1/2-3oz. That is a tight and smooth reel.

But why not go for a SW6000 for extra line capacity (290yds of 30lbs. I think they are the same body but deeper spool on the 6000?

Fun fact: At 17oz, the XTD5500 is just 1 oz heavier than both the 5k and 6k Spheros SW.

Correct, same rotor and body. I hope they don't replace the spheros with something less sealed, the new saratoga appears to be a supersize stradic platform reel... Maybe time to snap up a current spheros before they disappear forever.

XTD Ultegra is a great reel. I have one for long surf casts. It holds up pretty well for me. It is not the best reel ever, but works well as long as you take decent care of it. If you plan to dunk it or reel it while it's underwater, go with a fully sealed reel. Hope this helps!

just going to get the 6000 SW

Be careful when shopping (if online) not to get the JDM version. It has a weaker main gear and the drag washers are felt. Probably other differences also...

The American Shimano Corporation version has the cold forged aluminum coated main gear + carbon drag washers.

You can mainly recongnize the JDM version with the hole in the handle stem. Check Alan Hawk's review for examples and details.
