Today was a boat test / Recon trip.

I put another 4 hours on the new Merc 225s today. The hole shot and acceleration continue to be mind blowing. Top speed today with 80 gals of fuel was 61.5 mph just over the 6000 rpm red line.

Fuel Economy was excellent:
At 32 mph I saw 2.8 mpg
At 40 it was 2.5 mpg
At 45 it was 2.2 mpg
RPM per 100 is basically 1 MPH:
3000 = 30 give or take 1 or 2 based on conditions.

The most impressive thing was how the boat performed on ONE motor. I was able to get it to plane on the 150 single and reached around 28 mph if I remember correctly. But, I had to put people on the bow and play some games to make it plane.

With the 225's, no screwing around 1 motor trimmed out of the water and one trimmed all the way down got the boat on plane in about 8-10 seconds. Once on plane I was able to trim up a bit and saw just over FORTY 40 MPH on the single engine at WOT. I'm confident it will cruise at low 30's if I ever had to without beating the motor up.

I played the tide turn and found a PILE of bass from 18-27.5". Couldn't quite get the "keeper". Tons of fish under birds on nice 2-3" baits.

The Hogy Lures 1.25 oz Protail crushed it today. The epoxy jig landed fish and despite being a closer match to the bait was not as effective as the protail.

My bonus for the day was a Hickory Shad I dropped lifting it into the boat. I had never landed one until last year. We had a nice run of them for a few weeks in 2019, hoping to see another nice run this year as well.

Water temps were 52.5* and air temp was 57*. Wind was 20ish and chilly.

Final tally was 35-40 bass plus the shad.

A GREAT way to get the hell out of the house and shake the boat down.

Is that a juvenile sea herring in the bottom photo?

I think so.  Not 100% but it was 2-3" long.   Kind of bay chovie / silverside ISH looking.

Pretty sure they’re sea herring. For years I’ve tried to nail the ID down. They always show in Buzzards during May, but a few years back they stuck around the islands until July or so and were pretty grown by then, to the point where I was certain they were sea herring. Here are some pics, before and after.

No problem. It’s amazing how fussy they can become when they’re on those things.

Nice. Great observations.

Took a quick gander at a few Atl.herring studies. Some clips:
