Yeah, I've heard topwaters aren't supposed to work early but my first schoolie of the year typically comes on an Atom popper.

7/8 blue and white Atoms popper is a great lure in the spring.  Its good all year round.

but later in the year after the schoolies leave , go to a 1 1//4 oz.

That lure has been catching fish for over 50 years.  Why would it stop.

Years ago In the spring I would use 4 lures

7/8 Atoms popper  Blue and white

7/8 Atoms popper Orange pink /yellow belly

1 1/4 black Rebel

1 1/4 blue Rebel

If I could catch with those 4 lures it was time to go home.

Now days I use 7/8 Chug Bug by Storm

Yo zuri Crystal Minnows.

plus the old Atoms 7/8 as of above.

I still have a few of the smaller Atoms that also were used in the local pond here for salmon . . Me thinks they are still around , but most folks do not fish for them any longer. A few years back I had one friend who made it a point to use small atoms, both swimmers and poppers to get them up to 8 pounds . He has since passed unfortunately

A-1. Over the years I found the smaller7/8oz. Would catch more in the spring.    Also the old Atoms by Bob Pond , I thought we’re better that The new ones made out of a different material.   The only thing was that if you   hit a rock and lure could break in half.

But they still worked.   They are great on a windy day.
I think it’s one of the top lures ever made and caught more fish then most
