Decades ago, opening day of trout fishing was always the 3rd Saturday in April.

DEM was known as Rhode Island Fish & Wildlife than. There were a few times they would change the starting times too.

Some years it would be mid-night, but most of the time it would be sunrise not 6:00am like it is now. To note too, our Daylight savings time was different too, so morning sunrises were an our earlier. Clocks hadn't change yet.

This year I'd like to see the State delay the opening for at least another week to ten days, giving them more time to stock.

We've been having a lot of rain and all the rivers are near flood stages making too dangerous for novice anglers.

This would also give the stocking a chance to branch out in the rivers and ponds and find their own natural pockets and food supplies.

Hopefully too it would be a little less contagious time too. Too avoid large crowds, open it during the week without prior fanfare so crowds couldn't form.

Just announce it maybe the day it opens, without any further notice to control the crowds. But you know RI... with insider information. People can't keep a secret.

you mean so folks couldnt just cast a chunk of power bait and catch endless fish?

Opening day of trout and freshwater season in RI poses some challenges due to the need for strict adherence to social distancing guidance. DEM is considering the best approach for managing the upcoming fishing season. We will be back in touch soon!

To avoid crowds, It would be nice if DEM reported that Trout fishing season opened yesterday. :point:

When it come to RI you can count on Gina to make the wrong decision.

Yup, waiting for her to close boat ramps, parks and block CRMC right of ways to protect us from ourselves.

Yep, its just a matter of time. As soon as the weather gets nicer and people start to use ramps and parks she'll shut them down. I doubt she's smart enough to even know wha CRMC ROW is, so she'll probably shut the beaches.

I don’t know - RIDEM keeps promoting the state parks on their social media pages for hiking as long as people practice physical distancing.  Trout waters were being stocked as of last week.  Looks like the federal rules will now run until at least April 30.  Having an official scheduled opening day probably won’t work.  Best we can hope for is a silent opening where people can’t plan on the event.  Just announce it’s open and practice physical distancing - kind of how CT did it.
