Capt Carlos Bastos who lives in Holiday in Florida used to live in NJ.

I met him on the Elaine B out of Highland while blackfishing about 30 years ago.

He told me he found spots for sheepshead  and hogfish and asked me to come down.

As NJ Saltwater Expo was cancelled, I decided to drive down.

He said he got sheepshead and hogfish on tog jigs tipped with shrimp.

We went to sheepshead spot first.

Indeed, the jigs worked for sheepshead.

After fishing sheepshead briefly, we headed for hogfish spot.

I caught my first hogfish  by accident when I fished the Continental Shelf out of Morehead City about 30 years ago.

This is the first time we target hogfish.

I had three hogfish on jigs !

I thinks light tip of the rod is the key.  I used prototype 8'6" Black Hole Suzuki ultra light and Capt Carlos used 7'9" Black Hole Challenger Bank ultra light rod.  He had 4 consecutive hogfish with the rod and he was impressed as he never caught 4 hogfish on a single day.

It was  a fun day.  I will try to catch a few drum or snook before i head for NJ.

I can't wait to fish grouper and red snapper with Capt Carlos when the season is open.

I believe the areas he fish is one of the best gag grouper population in whole Florida.
