I've been looking at them. They look like they could do the job.

Try the needle nose out, the fat one displaces more water but the needle nose is more versatile to me. Jacks love them

Do you have colors that you prefer?

White or chartreuse, I'm not sure how much it matters as much as the movement and commotion on the surface. I'm a big believer in clear and black topwaters for certain species, but it hasn't seemed to matter with these. If you bring some fast and loud by some fired up jacks, there gonna eat. Not sure if roosters are similar.

I've looked at the Robert's Ranger and it may become the defacto stand-in, since you can actually get them. Spoffords seem as scarce, if not more so, as the Line Stretcher.

Spoffords are plentiful in tackle shops in Nantucket and maybe the Vineyard (I don't know) but hard to find elsewhere. Cheap lures too and I like them a lot more than Rangers (better quality). I will always reach for a Spoffords over a Roberts but I don't fish these much unless only big blues around. Fishing for blues with them on east coast...cast a mile. Single hook is great.

Watch the Skinner video with the lil doc.  I'm thinking that would work?

Besides both being lures that stay on the surface, they are very different.
