I wouldn’t want one with high mileage though. Once you get around 100K miles things start to fail. That's your definition of a great car?

Very impressive vehicles. Same. Subaru is the "sleeper" off-roader brand. Incredibly safe as well. Thinking about getting a new ride first of the year (new as in very used, budget probably around 10K) for hauling around my kayak on top and maybe once or twice a year doing some light beach driving to catch a fish or ten. Likely will get another forester or an outback but might consider a cross trek or wax with a rack on top. Thoughts on which engine is best, models I should stay away from etc?? I had a mint condition 1999 Outback with 61k miles on it and got the one way head gasket leak.. Its the exhaust gas that blows out the antifreeze so you get immediate temp spikes and then goes away. I was able to trade it in, thank god. I had a co-worker with a 2010 Forester and his went. The repair is around 2000-3000. I don't know if newer subs have the issue or not. That's big $$$$ to do it correctly. Wow, the head gasket issue is still out there? Man they suck!
Plug and teaser
I don't think Foresters have had a timing belt for many years.

Plug and teaser
I don't think there's been a head gasket issue for many years either. Only thing I worry about is the rubberband transmission, time will tell.
