This is no different from raising kids. Choices have consequences. Good choices will get good consequences. And conversely..... Good call. No second guessing yourself.

Good for you doing the right thing. I tell my son all the time (he's 5)..."rules are rules if you don't like the rules then don't play the game"

What makes this guy so special that he's above the rules?  There would be no fish around if we all played by his rules.

Maybe if he was nicer or sincere I woulda felt some remorse. But 15min? He likes to look at it? Give me a break. He underestimated you and got what he deserved.

I got stopped today when we were pulling at the ramp and they just chatted about the weather and my boat. Glad to see someone’s doing something! I could have had a full hatch of shorts.

not to worry about your actions..they were spot on....years ago we were rebuilding a home right on a harbor...as I'm working away a car drives down the off loading dock..not a problem there..then he opens his truck an pulls out fishing gear and starts catching schoolies...at most these things were 14 to 16" long...every time he's get one back to his trunk he goes with it to deposit it..after watching him do this many times he start to piss me off..now knowing epo's are a rare thing back then so I called the harbor master office...well low an behold he was there in a flash...he drove onto the dock and blocked the guy in...he walked up to the guy and escorted him back to his trunk and made him open it...the harbor master made him take out the white bucket an dump the fish back in the water...well by this time the fish were gull bait...but he made the guy pack his stuff up and leave...never saw him again...the interesting point is the harbor masters office told me they were lord and master of those water ways in that town and as such they act as an epo would with just as much power.

I was informed by the fisher that the fish has 15 minutes (where it can survive on land before it should go back) and I respond simply, “No it doesn’t.” Then he takes a cast and I ask why don’t you throw it back right now (instead of taking another cast) and the response was “I like to look at it.”  I was cordial for a couple more minutes making small talk (I am so not confrontational) and left, fuming. I replayed the scene over and over on my very short ride home and made the hotline call. I am still playing it over and over. Now that I am typing some of the specifics, I think I made the right call.

After reading this- you totally made the right call

Agreed. Although perhaps you should've thrown the fish and him into the water, then make the call in front of him.

You made the right decision and you should not feel guilty about it. Hopefully this will deter him from keeping short fish in the future.

Good for you. "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime..."  If he had expressed ignorance over the rules that might be different, but this guy knew what he was doing was wrong...  Hopefully they took his gear too
