Well the market is there....

There is very little market for the meat, even with indigenous.

The fur of the adults was never particularly valuable even when fur sold. With the market for fur a tiny fraction of what it was, just no incentive.

The world would be less outraged by a seal harvest if there were one damn good reason for it.

Not the sharks are "eating our fish and our children".:waah:

Nor that the Government "MISMANAGED" the seal "PROBLEM" by being successful at the job they were given.

Nor that a healthy population with a gigantic home range is "overpopulated" despite all scientific indicators that contradict that claim.

Obviously the peta types would lead the outrage and bring in the international press.

It's not them, it's the whole educated thinking rest of the world that would excoriate the US, Ma and especially Cape Cod.

Chamber of commerce scared of sharks hurting tourism?

They should be scared of photos of bloody seals carcasses rotting in piles.

We just need a couple seals to attack a couple PETA activist and politicians and that will get the ball rolling.

Silly.

For years it was "wait till some rich lawyer from NY gets bit"

Then it was "wait till there's a death".

And my personal favorite; "I can't wait until there's a fatality!"

welp, guess what? It done happened, and you all were wrong.

The more studies they do, the more obvious it is becoming, there is no science, no political will and no public support for killing seals to satisfy fishermen.

I wouldn't be opposed to more population control for certain marine mammals, but isn't seal meat pretty high in mercury?

Probably but besides animal rights, the real reason seal will never be valuable is that it tastes bad. Especially the big greys. Even the indigenous people can't dispose of the meat.

From my link above;

"Now, Canada is spending taxpayers' money trying to build markets in Asia, especially China. In China, the Canadian trade delegations are also pushing seal meat, which has been rejected by nearly everyone in the world due to its foul taste. This has resulted in a backlash among Chinese people who reject the notion that they will be a market for any and all animal flesh."

I wonder if it could even ethically be used in pet food?  As a replacement for menhaden protein?

That would definitely be the most logical choice.

It would still require an amendment to the Marine Mammal Protection Act just to import the meat.

Once again though, public sentiments are not moving in that direction. "Ethical", "humane", "green", even "vegan" foods are in demand for companion animals in the US.

Walk into any petco and try to feed dead seals to the doggy mommies and doggy daddies in Ma.

We need to get the Japanese interested in Seal ... once the are on it they will just about drive it to extinction. The objective is to formulate a recipe for Seal Sushi that has the same effects as Viagra or cures a cold and the Japanese will be all over it. Maybe it will divert their attention from the whales.

Don't stop ... Retrieving ...

Now you're thinkin'

Because I'm sure the Japanese haven't heard of seal meat. They just need you to invent a recipe.

And if it's being eaten over in Japan,  the world won't notice when seals go just about extinct.

Brilliant. Surprised no one else came up with it.

If there was a part of the seal comparable to rhino horns then poachers would be killing them left and right. We need to start a fake website for it.
