From studies I have read and people I know who work in fisheries Chesapeake fish are the only fish who will relocate to winter in areas other than where they were originally came from. Hudson River fish return to Hudson river Mullica River fish return to Mullica. This was identified in study using DNA.

Chesapeake fish used to go thru cape May rips thru Delaware Bay thru Delaware Chesapeake canal to Chesapeake bay. It appears this is no longer tha case. Cape May  rips Delaware bay striper fishery gone.

Everyone keeps blaming shore protection but we have still had some decent peanut and sand eel runs when beach replenishment was happening. Said this before but do not discount warming ocean waters with fish spending more time north and east of our shores. Those Chesapeake fish that passed nearshore to go thru Delaware bay May now go to North Carolina way offshore then up to Chesapeake
